Our Dental Assistants

Jennifer Filcheck, EFDA

Jen has been with our dental family since 2004 and holds a national certification in dental assisting as well as having contributed and authored e-learning courses with the Dental Auxiliary Learning and Education Foundation and Dental Assisting National Board. In our office, she strives to deliver exceptional dentistry with energy and enthusiasm in a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere, and when not chairside assisting she is managing the laboratory communications, clinical photography and inventory ordering for the practice. When not in the office, Jen spends her time vacationing and entertaining with her family….unless there is a ‘skins tailgate to attend then “all Hail” is breaking loose! Jen believes that our practice is successful because we are simply a team of highly educated, passionate, and kind people who have the desire to provide the best healthcare, to the best people we know, OUR patients!

Luana Figueiredo, Dental Assistant

Originally from a small town in Brazil, Luana is one of our newest dental assistants. She joined the Columbia Smiles family in 2014, and since has completed her dental assisting course and acquired her radiology certification. Because of her rather excessive interest in cleaning she became our office's OSHA manager making sure we provide the safest environment to our beloved patients. Her next immediate goal is to become a dental hygienist by enrolling in the Howard Community College hygiene program. Long term, after working for a few years as a hygienist, she plans to return to school to become a Dentist, and set up practices both here in Columbia, and in her home town in Brazil. In her free time, Luana is found either playing with her "babies", dogs Mowgli and Hatchi, or helping her husband Ben in his catering business.

Marissa Loughry, Dental Assistant

Marissa is the newest member of our staff having joined the team in 2015. Starting off as a patient, Marissa slowly discovered her love for dentistry. She previously went to Salisbury University but is now completing coursework at HCC to become a dental hygienist. When she is away from the office and school she can be found coaching lacrosse, playing with her German shepherd, or exploring Baltimore where she lives on the weekends.

Our Hygienists

Charleen Campagna, RDH

Charleen joined our practice in the mid 80’s, long before computers or digital xrays! She has spent many years helping the practice grow and change. An original Howard County native, she remains living in the community where she works. Her only child, Lindsay, blessed the family with twins Luke and Colin who are three. In addition to watching them grow, she is a great fan of staying in shape, fine dining, and the outdoors. Char feels that what makes our practice special is that we care deeply for the well-being of our coworkers and our community. “We continue to become better at our skills through coursework, reading, and communicating with our peers. We have total respect for one another and feel very proud to work next to Dr. Halpern.”

Maura Ordovensky, RDH

After many years of juggling teaching and private practice, Maura is now devoting more time to our office and working on her small business venture of helping hygiene students prepare for the National Board Examination. Early in her career with Columbia Smiles Family Dental practice she worked at the front desk as a receptionist and office coordinator. Her unique knowledge of business and clinical excellence allows her to offer professional continuing education courses on treatment planning and insurance coding, as well as Celiac Disease and its oral impact. As the Community Health Chairperson for the Howard County Dental Hygienist Association, her time outside the office is often spent volunteering at one of the many Howard County Dental Hygiene Association events. She also chairs a Maryland mandated Committee on Wellness for the State Board of Dental Examiners and Maryland State Dental Hygienist Association. Maura and her husband of 28 years have three beautiful and talented daughters named Taryn, Kylie, and Brynn, and two grandkids, Desmond and Josephine. Her family life centers around nightly family dinners, her horse, family vacations, and outdoor activities.

Kylie Ordovensky, RDH

Kylie is the newest member of our extraordinary dental hygiene team. Having first joined the Halpern team in 2012 as a dental assistant, Kylie spent the last several years completing the rigorous course work to become a registered dental hygienist. Her training has also allowed her to be certified to deliver local anesthesia and nitrous oxide minimal sedation. To further show how much she is diving right into this next role in the dental profession, Kylie has accepted the responsibility of Howard County Dental Hygiene Association Vice-President. Her love for family and friends is only exceeded by her love of animals (especially dogs!) and field hockey.

Front Office

Lilly Smith - Business Coordinator

Always eager to help out Lilly joined our practice in 2002 with over 15 years of experience working in the dental field. As Business Coordinator and multi-tasker extraordinaire she oversees the daily running of the front desk. As a member of the American Association of Dental Office Managers, Lilly continues to expand her already vast knowledge through the many mini courses offered throughout the year. She grew up traveling overseas as her father was a diplomat and later with her husband until his retirement from the USMC. Her bi-lingual skills have certainly been useful in assisting our Spanish-speaking patients. Being a Patient Advocate when it comes to the insurance maze gives her great enjoyment, and our patients benefit greatly from her expertise!

She shares the responsibility of caring for her beautiful Golden Retrievers with RC, her husband whom she married in 1983. A huge animal lover she spends much of her free time volunteering with GRREAT, a golden retriever rescue group and her church. Along with her volunteer work, Lilly enjoys reading, scrabble, working out and sightseeing.

Lilly says, “Our practice is special because our patients are truly special. We have the best patients and it is such a pleasure to help them.”

Melanie Feuerman - Scheduling Coordinator

Melanie is the first smile you see when you visit our office. She is a wonderful asset to our team having the challenge of organizing and juggling patient scheduling for the entire office. With over 30 years experience in management and customer service, Melanie provides a breath of fresh air thanks to her easy-going demeanor and friendly personality. She feels very fortunate and proud to be part of such a wonderful work family and enjoys interacting with our special patients. Melanie is a native Marylander, living in Elkridge with her husband Todd, a practicing CPA. They have 5 children, as well as two dogs, Rosie and Riley. When she is away from the office, she keeps herself busy through her passionate involvement in raising money for the St Jude Research Hospital, working out regularly and traveling to Florida.
